The Expanded Mind of Heathcliff
[NOTE: you may want to watch this video full screen, in a dark room, as a lot of the footage used is dark, the sound is also important so please ensure that your device is of sufficient volume]
This short film is portrayed through the eyes of the ghost of the character of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë.
Set in present day, the ghost of Heathcliff roams the moors and the graveyard, in particular the grave of his beloved Catherine, in uncontrollable rage, yearning and sadness on remembering Catherine. The narrative of the film is to show how places can spark memories, which can then spark emotions and further cause someone to brood and reminisce the past. The aim of this video is to capture both the memories and the reality of the ghost of Heathcliff, through his eyes, and to portray the emotion in which he looks to or back on those events through how they are shown through film.
The purpose of this film is for one of my final pieces for my Art A2 coursework. This film will be projected onto a life-size wire skeleton sculpture [see my tumblr page for pictures], with this film portraying the memories and life, the 'expanded mind', of this skeleton. The video footage has been carefully composed and manipulated to suit this purpose meaning that some of the footage may make more sense when shown projected onto the sculpture. Such as sections where only a small amount of life is present, but when projected onto the skeleton sculpture, which has no skull, these areas of light will be present where the skull would be, corresponding with the idea that it is the 'expanded mind' of the skeleton.
